I’m finally sharing Piper’s big girl room today! We took these pictures when Fields was still in my belly, and we had the best morning playing together in her room, soaking up all of our one on one time together.
With a new baby coming, we wanted to transition her to her big girl bed before his arrival. We knew we would also be potty training her and trying to quit sucking her thumb, all while becoming a new big sister, so we wanted to have the big girl bed well out of the way. Plus, we needed the crib for his nursery. We thought about doing a toddler or even a twin bed, but since our home is only 3 bedrooms her room also serves as the guest room. Since it’s the only place for guests to stay (without blow up mattresses), we went with a double bed so we could at least sleep two people. Plus, it’s a bed she can grow into well into even her teen years. The bed is from wayfair and you can find it here.
She “helped” us move the bed in and we really tried to build up the whole process, telling her what a great helper she was. We also called it her big girl bed, and made a lot of hype around that. She was so excited to show everyone who came over her “big girl bed.” Even with her initial excitement, it took about 4 nights for her to really transition and start to feel comfortable in it. She cried the first couple of nights, and it reminded me of the early days when she was learning to self soothe in her crib…so sad!
We really tried to keep everything about her routine exactly the same, with the only change being her new bed. My mother in law got her a new pillowcase that we put on her pillow, and she was surprisingly SO excited to sleep on her pillow case. Another thing that I think could help would be letting your little one pick out their new sheets and/or comforter. Now that she’s transitioned, I think she actually sleeps so much better snuggled under the covers and with a pillow. But OK, now onto the room with a billion beautiful pictures by Jessi Nichols Photography…
I’ve kept real plants in here before, but since her blinds are closed so often for nap time, plants have never done well in here. When I killed the last one, I gave up and decided to go faux. This fiddle leaf is from Target, and the stand is from ikea. I don’t think the plant is available, but here’s a cute similar one!
Her beloved dog, “Kiki.” She has a handful of other favorites, and when we put her to bed she always says “I need my animals.” ;)
This bookshelf has turned out to be one of the biggest hits in the room. I love that she can see them, and I think it encourages reading more! Plus, it adds a fun design element.
Funny story – we got the Jimmy Fallon ‘Dada ‘ and ‘Mama’ books for her for Christmas. The ‘Dada’ book is so simple, and says dada on every page and then the sound the animal makes. We’ll put some books in bed with her at nap time, and we’ll hear her sitting on her bed reading the book, going “Dada…Quack!” So cute.
Some of our favorite books shown above: Flora and the Flamingo / Lily the Unicorn / Madeline / Dragons Love Tacos / Lily the Unicorn / The Wonderful Things You Will Be / Mama / Dada / Oh, The Places You’ll Go / Where the Wild Things Are / Olivia
When I think of creating a home that we love, I am so thankful to services like Terminix that help to ensure a safe, sound home. They worry about the icky stuff, so I can worry about all the pretty stuff, like decorating my baby girl’s room ;).
My girl! So proud of the little lady she is becoming. I was such a hormonal, emotional wreck when we moved her crib out and switched around her room. She was just a teeny thing! She might be a ‘big girl’ now, but still my baby, always.
